What fascinated you about the female protagonist, Miriam?
To me, Miriam embodies more than just one individual life story: Ever since the socialist counterproposal to our consumer society failed worldwide, an entire generation has been adrift in a void. In the film, Miriam talks about the necessity of obtaining information in order to make up one's own mind. She quite rightly criticizes the fact that there is no public discourse in Cuba. But then she escapes from a country of censorship to a country of media overkill and media hysteria. She flees from a country of lack to a country of excess. And in my opinion this has led her to failure. She is not happy in the United States. And this ambivalence of her feelings is the political point of the film.
