A B O U T T H E F I L M | Interview with Christian Frei
What were your experiences on the other side, in the U.S.? In the U.S. we also shot some scenes in off-limits military areas and had to observe any number of complicated regulations. Here's an example: The most popular commentator on Radio Martí, General Rafael del Pino, has been living under FSI protection in a secret U.S. location ever since his defection from Cuba. When we wanted to film him at the studios of Radio Martí, the USIA prohibited it for security reasons. How did you eventually manage to shoot that scene? I obtained Rafael del Pino's address and phone number, ca lied him, and we shot the scene in our hotel with a microphone we borrowed from Radio Martí. That story sounds like a reminder of the Cold War. The war of the radios between Cuba and the U.S. is indeed one of the last battlefields of the Cold War. |
